Hi Gary , its not one of the more common type that tend to be used but someone will put you straight soon, electrics are not my strong point so I will leave any further advice to the more experianced.
Best of luck Marshall This post has been edited by Shaun Kilgarriff: Jul 31 2010, 09:16 PM

Hi Gary,
I had one fitted to my van for 18 months. I started to notice that wasnt switching correctly and tried to adjust it which it refused to do. It then failed and switched my leisure batteries to earth blowing a few fuzes. I now have the smartcom version. -------------------- Most people call me Nobby, My wife (Amanda) and Mum call me John, but when Im in trouble they use my middle and last name as well!

Hi Gary,
You have started the first job on my next conversion which I am not supposed to be doing yet. [orders from above] Used a CBE kit last time very expensive. I will try and build a neat 12v distribution box of my own which I can fully understand, repair and add to. I have ordered one of these relays as the starting point. 30amp capacity looks OK. Going to cornwall in Sept. so will visit the 12v shop in St Austell for a rumage, that will interest the boss may have to drop her off at the beach first. Cheers Mick |

It would have seemed to have been a good option until someone reported a failure but as the guy has good feedback you ask him about the failure rate. Seems a more economic option that a b2b charger that reportedly was going up to £300. Obviously if you go for this cheap option make sure you have all lines fused!

Hi Gary , I also use a smartcom relay , it costs about £18.00 off ebay and I have not heard any bad reports on them , the you have chose might be ok but it has been mentioned about a failure. Has anyone had a problem with the smartcom ?.
Cheers Marshall |

The only problem I see with these type of systems is that 30 amps is a bit low. A battery in need of charge can take quite a bit more than that when the alternator first starts to charge it. If you have even a 70 amp alternator, it might be trying to push 70 amps through the leisure battery for instance. I think it is better to use one of these voltage sensing relays to switch a bigger relay that carries the charge current rather than carrying the current itself. In that case you could use the lower powered 15 amp one to do the switching although, to be honest, you could just have it switched directly from the ingnition for all the difference it makes.

Am now on my third one of these in 6 months. I was thinking of putting a 20 amp fuse on the outlet to protect it this time. Then I would know if 30amps is too small. Wouldn`t recommend them.

I`ve had a smartcom 30a for two years and apart from the odd blown fuse, it`s worked fine.
Till recently. I just fitted a large audio amp and this seems to be drawing a bit and causing the relay to switch on and off rapidly, I have tweaked the threshold and that helped but I`m not convinced. I have an LED fitted in the dash that is wired to the fridge output and that lets me know if the circuit it open or not As a result I`m upgrading to a 100 amp system using the two relay method suggested by vagabond, and moving the amp feed to a completely seperate line, and we`ll see how that goes. I tried one of the 15a relays posted above for my very first split charge and it didn`t last the week in france. Luckily I had the smartcom as a spare. -------------------- We build, We travel, We break down.
